#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward's "instantly addictive"* novels of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continue as an ally of the Brotherhood must face his own dark desires....

Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world. He's got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. If he can't have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.

Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him.

I loved this book. This story takes place in a world where vampires exist. This is the fourth book in the black dagger brotherhood series, in this book we follow Marissa and Butch.
Marissa is a aristocratic vampire. All her life she was seen as the kings thrown away mate. The king didn't want her and so the vampire society thought she was defective. This really took a toll on Marissa and how she behaved toward others. The society of the vampires is a lot like social society in the 1800s of England.
Butch is a human, and he lives with the brotherhood. Since Butch is human he doesn't feel like he completely belongs in the brotherhood. He isn't allowed to go fight with them and he isn't as connected with the other brothers because of him being human.
I flew through this book. There was a lot more action in this book than I thought there would be, but it made the book so much more enjoyable. I loved how we got to see the other characters from past books in the series and I also loved how we didn't just get the romance between Butch and Marissa. This is by far my favorite book in the series! Definitely go check out this series if you haven't!!!
