A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Wow. This book was amazing. I loved the world building and how the author decided to take the book in the way that it went. The book wasn't heavily filtered with world building, which I really appreciated. The whole story and history of the world was very easy to follow.
This book follows Poppy who is a maiden. She isn't allowed to do other things that "normal" people can do because that is seemed unbecoming. She is supposed to pure and innocent. Poppy has to wear a veil and all her life she has been preparing for her ascension . But she has always wanted to break away from being the maiden.
Hawke is one of the most swoon worthy hero's I've ever read. He's sweet, caring, loving, kind, etc. I just love him so much. He and Poppy meet one night but he didn't know who she was. Later he becomes her personal guard. They start up this amazing romance.
I just can't get over how perfect this book was. There were so many twist and turns that shocked me. The only reason why readers would be hesitant to pick up this book is because it is 600 pages long. But the amount of pages doesn't really matter when the book is just this amazing. Go pick this book up now you won't regret it!
